Hope shines through the floodwaters
Hope shines through the floodwaters
Over the past fortnight, Ingham and Townsville have faced the challenges of severe flooding, with many enduring days without power and cut-off roads. Yet, even in the midst of hardship, hope remains strong. Water levels are beginning to recede, roads have reopened, and the incredible resilience of these communities continues to shine.
Even as they navigate uncertainty, the spirit of generosity and care has been unwavering. In one moment of kindness, a family who had given away their remaining fuel found unexpected help when a neighbour—who had lost almost everything—was able to repair their generator, restoring some power. This act of service reflects the heart of these communities: standing together, sharing what they have, and lifting each other up in times of need.
Although travel disruptions have brought disappointment, there is also a deep sense of purpose—this is a time to care for one another, to support neighbours, and to trust that brighter days are ahead. While many homes have suffered damage, faith remains unshaken. These communities are not alone; prayers, encouragement, and practical support from the wider church family continue to strengthen them.
As we hold the people of Ingham and Townsville in our prayers, we are reminded of God’s promise:
‘When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you’ (Isaiah 43:2).
May this assurance bring comfort and courage as these communities rebuild with faith and determination.

A prayer for those in flood
by LCAQD First Assistant Bishop Ben Hentschke
Gracious and merciful God,
We lift before You all who are suffering from the effects of flooding rain in North Queensland.
Be with those whose homes, livelihoods, and communities have been impacted.
Grant strength and endurance to emergency workers and volunteers who bring aid and relief.
Comfort those who mourn, sustain those who are weary, and give hope to all who face uncertainty.
In the midst of loss and devastation, remind us of Your abiding presence and love.
Lord, in Your mercy,
Hear our prayer.
