From “In” School Training to “Online” School Training

LYQ has been serving Queensland’s young people through camps and programs for many years now, one of their key projects being their In School Training ministry.

“In school training is an incredible opportunity that LYQ has to engage with young people.  We run a variety of leadership programs within schools for students between grade 3 and grade 12,” says LYQ’s In-School Training Manager Kim Davies-Graham. “We work to build an intentional and relational connection with young people to best equip, engage, and challenge them to be the best that they can be as leaders and as young people.” 

Kim took over the role one month ago, just as the Covid-19 restrictions were starting to ramp up and it looked like schools would be moving to remote learning.  She quickly realised she would need to adapt to keep this ministry alive and to keep serving young people during this time.

“We are going above and beyond with teamwork to find ways we can engage with young people better online,” says Kim. “We are interested in making relevant content so we’ve created our online chapel series which intends to engage with young people and give them a safe space to process things spiritually, emotionally and mentally.  Our other new pathway is our Thriving Through Covid-19 program which is designed to specifically provide young people with an outlet and professional advice to be able to thrive during this time.”

Kim has had to adapt to the changing circumstances whilst learning the ropes for her new role which has been challenging, but for her, sharing God’s love in this time any way we can is important.

“We need to go beyond the normal, the expected, and go beyond fear, to actually engage with our communities and not be scared of change or risking something.  It might not be the best quality, but it’s for the sake of somebody else and for the sake of actually providing positive content that is supportive during this time.”
