Final invitation: step out so girls can step up

Brisbane Walk My Way is almost here, and if you have been meaning to register, this is your moment.

On Saturday 8 August, our church community will gather at QUT Gardens Point to step out in support of girls in refugee communities in Kenya and Somalia. Together, we will walk, celebrate, pray, encourage one another and take practical action to help refugee girls stay in school.

When a girl can remain in school, she has more time to learn, to grow, to make choices and to imagine a different future. Her life changes, and her community is benefits as she shares her talents and wisdom. That is what we are walking for.

Whether you choose the 3km walk, the 12.5km walk, or simply come to enjoy the vibrant community hub, this will be a day full of purpose and joy. With African food stalls, live stage performances, singing, dancing and a welcoming atmosphere for all ages, Brisbane Walk My Way offers a wonderful opportunity to gather as one church community and share a public witness of faith in action.

At the heart of Brisbane Walk My Way is a simple but deeply important conviction: every girl is precious to God.

That is why our Lutheran community is stepping out on Saturday 8 August to support girls in refugee communities in Kenya and Somalia to stay in school. For girls facing poverty, displacement and the risk of early marriage, education is not just about learning. It is protection. It is dignity. It is time to grow, to mature and to imagine a different future.

Stories like Isaro’s help us see this more clearly. Isaro is eight years old and lives in Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya. She loves learning and dreams of becoming a police officer so she can protect her community. Like every child, she has gifts, hopes and a future worth nurturing. But for many girls in refugee settings, staying in school is far from guaranteed.

That is why this year’s Walk My Way matters so much. When we walk and fundraise, we are taking practical action to help protect girls by supporting them to remain in school. We are saying, in a real and tangible way, that their lives matter, their education matters and their future matters.

As people of faith, this is part of our witness. We believe God sees the vulnerable, values the overlooked and calls us to love our neighbour in practical ways. Brisbane Walk My Way is one of those opportunities where compassion becomes action.
