St John’s Classroom fund 20 refugees through lunchtime bottle collection!

“A little bit of effort on our part, can change another child’s whole future!”

This was the comment from a 9-year-old boy in our classroom at St John’s Lutheran School in Kingaroy, as we talked about our recycling roster.

Throughout 2021, the Year 4 students have been collecting and sorting the drinks containers around the school. It’s not a pleasant job some days, especially if the container hasn’t been emptied and the remaining flavoured milk has not responded favourably to the Queensland heat! But it’s a job that needs to be done, if we are going to help kids on the other side of the world. That’s our plan.

We’ve heard about Kakuma and struggled to imagine the reality of living in a refugee camp. Our teacher has told us about The GRACE Project, and with some extra influences from environmentally conscious students, we have set about to collect the empty drink containers and return them to Containers for Change.

So here we are almost at the end of the year. With 20 students in our class, we can celebrate that 20 refugee students will now have a chance with education, thanks to our lunchtime collection.  $520 – that’s 5200 empty containers!
