Program Highlights:

We have an excellent lineup to equip and encourage us:

  • Dr Tod Bolsinger (author of Canoeing the Mountains, and Tempered Resilience) will focus on developing resilience in leadership, particularly when guiding congregations through significant change. Tod will share practical insights on how pastors can be shaped and refined by the challenges they encounter in ministry.
  • LCAQD Bishop Rev Dr Mark Vainikka will present ‘Listening, Dignity, and Reconciliation: Some Musings to Generate Reflection’, reflecting on theology and insights from Bonhoeffer, Rowan Williams, and Harvard’s Dr Donna Hicks to strengthen unity through listening.
  • LCAQD Assistant Bishop for Mission Rev David Schmidt will lead an Open Space Technology session around the Convening Question: 'Leadership in Mission: As we lead God's people into unfamiliar and rapidly changing mission landscapes, how is the Spirit reshaping us to be leaders who can faithfully hold tension, adapt with courage, and form communities that witness to the Gospel in resilient, hope-filled ways?'
  • ALC Principal Rev Dr Tim Stringer will explore Preaching through Trials, encouraging pastors to proclaim hope amid hardship.
  • Lead Pastor (Immanuel Buderim) and ALC Casual Academic Rev Dr Daniel Mueller will deliver the Bishop James Haak Memorial Lecture, entitled: The Doctrine of Sin in a Post-Everything World, discussing how traditional metaphors for sin might be updated to connect more meaningfully with contemporary audiences, drawing fresh Biblical imagery to enrich preaching today.

Overview of logo image

Flames of blue and orange leap from an overturned vessel.

The vessel

The vessel is heated and tipped on its side:

  • In scripture, a ‘vessel’ metaphorically represents a person or thing used by God, often for carrying or holding something of spiritual importance, like the Holy Spirit or a message (cf. 2Tim 2:21; 2Cor 4:7.) Vessels sometimes carried items of importance, such as gold or silver (cf. 2Chron 24:14; Ezra 1:7-11.)
  • The vessel is tipped on its side, with its contents escaping; the lip of the vessel resembles arms reaching outwards and upwards. As in Matt 5:16, the faith and strength received from God should not be contained within vessels, that is, within us, but 'spill out' onto, and be witnessed by, all of God’s people (cf. Isaiah 43:10; Acts 1:8.)
  • The vessel is heated. In Biblical times gold and silver refining often involved heating the metals in clay vessels, to separate them from impurities and other metals. This allusion is often used to describe how God refines and strengthens us (cf. 1 Peter 1:7; 2 Cor 4:7.)

The flames

Flames of orange and blue leap from the vessel:

  • The colours appear on a gradient, representing the refining and strengthening process referred to in the theme.
    • Blue is often associated with purity, and the process of purification, as well as faith and divine grace. In Judaism, blue threads in prayer shawls represent holiness and the connection to heaven. They also call us to remember God’s finished work, which for Christians is the person of Christ (cf. Numbers 15:37-41.)
  • Throughout scripture, fire is used to demonstrate God's power, His holy presence, and His role as both judge and refiner. The imagery of fire reminds us of God’s greatness and His desire to make us holy. On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit appeared as tongues of fire resting on the disciples, empowering and strengthening them to spread the Gospel (cf. Acts 2:3-4; Luke 3:16.) In the First Testament God speaks to His people from the fire: 'The Lord our God has shown us His glory and His majesty, and we have heard His voice from the fire. Today we have seen that a person can live even if God speaks with them' (Deut. 5:24).
