Finding hope in the names of Jesus
Finding hope in the names of Jesus
As we enter the season of Advent, we are invited to pause and reflect amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life. Advent is more than a liturgical period; it’s a profound opportunity to realign our hearts and minds with the foundational truths of our faith. This season beckons us to embrace both the celebration of Jesus’ birth and the anticipation of His promised return.
In today’s fast-paced world, filled with constant notifications, endless to-do lists, and societal pressures, finding moments of stillness can be challenging. Advent offers a countercultural rhythm—a time to slow down, to wait, and to prepare. It’s a call to step away from the distractions and focus on the deeper meaning of this season.
The word “Advent” comes from the Latin adventus, meaning “coming” or “arrival.” Traditionally, it encompasses a dual focus: the commemoration of Christ’s first coming in Bethlehem and the hopeful expectation of His second coming. This duality resonates deeply with us today. While we prepare to celebrate the Nativity—the humble birth that changed the course of history—we also look forward with hope to the fulfillment of God’s promises in the future.
In our contemporary context, waiting is often seen as a nuisance. We value instant gratification and quick results. However, Advent teaches us the spiritual discipline of waiting with purpose. It’s about cultivating patience and trust in God’s timing, acknowledging that not all things are immediate, and some of the most significant blessings require faithful anticipation.
This season of Advent also invites us to think about who Jesus is for us. In Isaiah 9:6, the prophet gives us four names for the coming Messiah:
- Wonderful Counsellor: In times of confusion or decision, Jesus offers guidance and wisdom. Advent is a chance to seek His counsel and find clarity in His words.
- Mighty God: When we feel weak or overwhelmed, Jesus is our strength. Remembering His power helps us face challenges with confidence during this season.
- Everlasting Father: In moments of loneliness or uncertainty, Jesus provides comfort and a sense of belonging. Advent reminds us that we are part of God’s eternal family.
- Prince of Peace: Amidst stress and chaos, Jesus brings peace. This is a time to let His peace fill our hearts and overflow into our relationships with others.
While I was reflecting on these names of Jesus, and also humming/singing the words to my favourite Advent hymns “Come Thou Long Expected Jesus” and “O Come O Come Emmanuel” I penned the following words to share with you:
Come, long-expected Jesus here,
Bring joy to hearts both far and near.
Born to rescue, set us free,
Our hope, our rest, our liberty.
Wonderful Counsellor, wisdom’s light,
You guide our steps through darkest night.
Your truth brings peace, your love restores,
Our faithful Saviour, forever yours.
O come, O come, Emmanuel,
With grace and power, all fears dispel.
Mighty God, who calms the storm,
Your strength upholds, your love transforms.
Everlasting Father, love so true,
In every moment, we turn to you.
Through all our days, your care is near,
Your faithful promise calms each fear.
Come, promised Peace, our hearts release,
And let your justice never cease.
Prince of Peace, with kindness reign,
Your kingdom’s joy will never wane.
So lift your voice, the Saviour’s near,
Let all the earth in love draw near.
From heaven’s throne to earth He came,
Forever praised, His holy name.
May this Advent season fill you with hope, peace, love and joy as we celebrate the coming of our Saviour and look forward to His return.
Your fellow servant,
Rev Ben Hentschke
