Jubilee 150 of the first recorded Scandinavian Language Service
The 150th Jubilee of the first Scandinavian language service in Queensland will be observed on Sunday June 26, 10am at St Andrew’s Church, Wickham Terrace, Brisbane.
The music will be led by one of the Lutheran Church’s finest organists, Mark Boughen, on the Bethlehem Memorial (pipe) Organ built by the Danish-Australian, the late Knud Smenge.
The current Pastor is the Finnish born Tommi Vuorinen, who is tri-lingual, and is also the Pastor for the Finnish Congregation. For the Jubilee Service, various languages will be used with some texts.
The Feast Day will include a ‘High Scandinavian Morning Tea’, with appropriate coffee (!) and an historical exhibition. For catering purposes, please email Ms. Karyn Cullen to confirm attendance by 9 June or call 0411276235 with any questions.
A Lego competition is in the pipeline. The walls of the church will display some of the Scandinavian saints from the past.
*Image: The symbol used in Norden, the Scandinavian monthly newspaper in Australia founded in 1896 by Jens Sorensen Lyng (1886-1941), to advertise the worship services of the United Scandinavian Lutheran Church in Melbourne, prior to 1908. As there are no colours the flags are difficult to identify but it is suggested that they are the Norwegian, Danish, Swedish and Australian flags of the time.
