On Saturday 15 January, an underwater volcano eruption and tsunami in Tonga caused severe damage. The tsunami is estimated to have impacted around 1800+ households’ food supply across Tonga (around 5000 people). An undersea cable was damaged, cutting communications. Even satellite phones were dropping out after three or four minutes. The good news is ALWS can take your love and care to Tonga through our membership of the Church Agencies Network* here in Australia. The Festival of Learning is a celebration open to anyone and everyone interested in thinking, talking and learning about God. A High Court of Australia judgement (Fairfax vs Voller) in September has implications for all organisations that use social media. A majority of justices (5–2) ruled that the owners of social media accounts can be considered ‘publishers’ and are thereby potentially liable for defamatory and other illegal comments on the accounts. This applies even if the comments were made by a third party and even if the organisation did not know the comments were there. Both Nazareth (Woolloongabba) and St Andrew’s (Brisbane City) congregations are spring cleaning and have lots of glass jars to give away – jars that would be suitable for bottling preserves and honey. Jar sizes vary; some will need labels removed. There are also some plastic jars suitable for food storage or filling with homemade goodies as Christmas presents.
