Attention Congregations with Social Media Accounts!
A High Court of Australia judgement (Fairfax vs Voller) in September has implications for all organisations that use social media. A majority of justices (5–2) ruled that the owners of social media accounts can be considered ‘publishers’ and are thereby potentially liable for defamatory and other illegal comments on the accounts. This applies even if the comments were made by a third party and even if the organisation did not know the comments were there. Both Nazareth (Woolloongabba) and St Andrew’s (Brisbane City) congregations are spring cleaning and have lots of glass jars to give away – jars that would be suitable for bottling preserves and honey. Jar sizes vary; some will need labels removed. There are also some plastic jars suitable for food storage or filling with homemade goodies as Christmas presents. The General Church Board has announced that the in-person sessions of the 20th Convention of General Synod will be held from 9 to 12 February 2023 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. The later-than-anticipated date is due to the unavailability of the convention centre at a time suitable to the LCANZ. More information will be announced as details become available.
