2026 Lenten Appeal
Continuing the legacy of our founding Lutheran congregations
Queensland Lutheran congregations built the aged care and community services that today form Lutheran Services. Our annual Lenten Appeal continues that legacy—honouring the vision and hard work of those who came before us.
Making a difference today
The Lenten Appeal supports:
- Hospital chaplaincy
- Chaplaincy at Mary and Martha’s Refuge
Supporters can choose to direct their donation to one of these areas, or contribute to general initiatives across Lutheran Services.
Funds raised help support programs that do not receive government funding—the practical, meaningful supports that make a real difference in people’s lives. In recent years, this has included projects such as a new playground at Mary and Martha’s domestic and family violence refuge.
Mary and Martha’s Refuge
In recent years, the Lenten Appeal has helped build a new playground at Mary and Martha’s and supported the employment of a dedicated chaplain for staff.
‘Working in domestic and violence sector is demanding; and I am here to help the helpers. Supporting staff well-being so they can continue to do the amazing work of supporting women and families to get back on their feet and provide comfort and support to those families at their greatest time of need.’ Wendy,
Chaplain Mary and Martha’s Refuge
Lutheran chaplains in hospitals
Lenten Appeal funds also help Lutheran Services provide training and support for our volunteer Lutheran hospital chaplains.
Our hospital chaplaincy program receives no government funding. All Lutheran chaplains in hospitals are volunteers, providing pastoral care across 10 hospitals in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Hervey Bay, Mackay and Mt Isa.
‘I still remember the passing of my father 26 years ago and the amazing support of hospital chaplain Graham Huf. Graham and my dad Ken built a really lovely friendship during the time he was in hospital. He brought a lot of comfort to dad and my family.’ Judy Litfin, Rosewood
Through the Lenten Appeal, congregations continue the ministry of care begun nearly 90 years ago—bringing comfort, hope and practical support to those who need it most.
