Celebrating 75 Years of Faith and Community at St Mark’s Lutheran Church Ingham
Celebrating 75 Years of Faith and Community at St Mark’s Lutheran Church, Ingham
On Saturday May 18, and Sunday May 19, LCAQD Bishop Mark Vainikka and Pastor David Schmidt joined the joyous celebration of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church’s 75th anniversary in Ingham. The festivities kicked off at Finn’s Hall, where heartwarming stories were shared about the Finnish immigrants who provided support and accommodation for new workers arriving from Finland in the late 1940s. These inspirational tales highlighted how the community gathered in faith to support one another in a new land.
The Finnish settlers, who connected deeply with the local sugar cane industry, many becoming farmers, showcased their resilience and tenacity over the years. Though their numbers have dwindled, their enduring faith in a loving and ever-present God remains strong. This resilience was beautifully illustrated during the Saturday night dinner when Eva Grace, the youngest active member of the congregation at just 11 years old, spoke. She shared how, despite longing for a larger Sunday School, she felt profoundly blessed by the intergenerational support of her church community, who walked alongside her as she grew in her faith.
The weekend was not only a blessing to the current congregation but also to past pastors and members who returned to join in the celebration. The stories and fellowship experienced over the two days reaffirmed the strong bonds of faith and community that have defined St. Mark’s Lutheran Church for 75 years. This milestone event was a testament to the enduring spirit and faith of the congregation, bringing together generations in a celebration of their shared history and commitment to God’s work.
One of the most touching moments of the celebration occurred during the thanksgiving service, where Bishop Mark’s sermon beautifully acknowledged the church’s Finnish heritage while also connecting with the Italian community. This powerful message resonated deeply with many attendees. One of St. Mark’s older former members, who had travelled from afar for the weekend, shared a particularly moving experience. With tears in her eyes, she recounted how a Sister from the local Catholic Church, who is also of Italian heritage, sat beside her during the service and took communion with her from the Common Cup.
This past member explained how she and the Sister had been neighbours and childhood playmates in Ingham. Growing up, they were not allowed inside each other’s churches, let alone to take communion together. This worship and communion experience was incredibly special and meaningful to her, symbolizing a beautiful unity and shared faith that transcended cultural and religious divides. She expressed her joy and the profound impact of this moment multiple times before leaving Ingham after the weekend.
The celebration of St. Mark’s 75th anniversary was more than just a commemoration of the past; it was a powerful reminder of the enduring faith and community spirit that continues to thrive. It highlighted the importance of unity, acceptance, and the shared journey of faith that brings people together, regardless of their backgrounds. This anniversary was a true testament to the love and support that St. Mark’s Lutheran Church has provided to its members and the broader community over the years.
