“Immense Joy and Privilege”: LYQ Reports to Synod
Lutheran Youth Queensland (LYQ) Report
LYQ Director Darren Pope and Chair Janelle Anderson presented to Synod delegates, declaring that it was an immense joy and privilege to have the opportunity to impact young lives through authentic partnerships and rich experiential learning in the LYQ camping and coaching ministries.
Darren, who has many years of school related experience with students and with leading and managing staff, accepted LYQ’s offer to be appointed as the new LYQ Director in November 2022 after many years of faithful service from former Director Aaron Glover.
Delegates asked about the anticipated outcomes of the review of Koojarewon Youth Camp. Darren advised that a new camp manager and his family are starting at Koojarewon Youth Camp this week, but he and Janelle were unable to advise on the response to the review because they are investigating the review recommendations and awaiting legal advice which will then be taken to District Church Board. Following this process, they will communicate again with stakeholders.
Following a question from the floor, Darren and Janelle highlighted the importance of volunteers of all ages and how LYQ could work collaboratively with congregations to grow faith in young people, and then encourage them to volunteer. Grant funding from the LLL will enable camp leaders to have their camp attendance fully subsidised as needed.
Over the past year, LYQ noted:
- The significant journey to strengthen structures and oversight
- campers were welcomed to Luther Heights for the very first Summer Christian Life Week
- LYQ now equips more than 2,000 students every year through their leadership and personal development workshops facilitated in Lutheran, Catholic, and Independent schools across Queensland.
